World Junior Ultimate Championships 2022

After arriving in Wroclaw on Friday night, we were informed we were playing Poland in the Show Game after the opening ceremony on Saturday. This was huge news, and an excellent opportunity to showcase women's ultimate as the opening match is usually a men's match.

I got two assists in the first half and after 60 minutes of play we found ourselves taking the first half 8-5. We extended this lead to 11-5 until Poland went on a run to make it 11-10 as we reached the soft time cap of 100 minutes. This meant the first to reach 12 would win. Poland got a quick score to make it 11-11 - it was sudden death. We started on offense but an overthrown sidearm from me meant Poland had a chance to win. We set up our zone defence, trapping them on the sideline leaving them with the only option to throw a hammer to the endzone which didn't come off. A huck up the line from my teammate went to our captain who got an easy pass off into the endzone for the score; we had won 12-11 in the 116th minute!!!

We spent the rest of the tournament leading in Spirit score which, as Spirit Captain, I had to enter after each game as you rate the opposing team on 5 categories: rules knowledge and use, fouls and body contact, fair-mindedness, positive attitude and self-control and lastly, communication. Unfortunately in the last two days our score dropped slightly and the Austrians overtook us to win the Spirit of the Game award. However I enjoyed utilising my French and Spanish A levels to communicate with other teams, helping resolve some tricky calls and agree with the opposition on the physicality of the game.

A huge thank you to JHMT for helping fund my trip; it has helped me become more confident not only on the pitch as a player but also off the pitch as an individual.

I don't think that there is a sport with more friendliness and sense of community than frisbee, and I encourage anyone to give it a go and join their local club!
