The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust

The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust ( JHMT), which was set up after the tragic death of Joe Humphries from Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS) which kills in excess of 650 people aged 12-35 every year in the UK.

Joe collapsed after a cardiac arrest minutes from his home in Rothley on 4/10/12. Joe was fit, healthy and just 14 years old. SADS will never be eradicated but the JHMT is working to raise awareness of this group of subtle heart conditions and to increase survival rates by teaching CPR in schools and sports clubs and ensuring the availability of community use Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).

In collaboration with other partner agencies, the JHMT are:

  • Ensuring a quality assured programme of CPR training and AED familiarisation is provided in all schools along with one AED in each secondary school.
  • Increasing the number of sports clubs/facilities which adopt CPR and AED familiarisation and facilitating the purchase of a suitable AEDs within each facility which are available 24/07.
  • Working with all healthcare providers to create clinics for the investigation of SADS affected families.
  • Working with UHL to improve the bereavement support currently provided to families following a sudden cardiac death (SADS related) for teenagers and young adults.
  • Hosting medical conferences, workshops, symposiums and CPD linked teaching to increase awareness of SADS and its management for health professionals, sports coaches and all who work with children and young adults.

Tragically young people like Joe are denied the right to experience life to the full and develop their potential. In June 2014, the JHMT launched the Inspire Awards – the Trust offers small grants to help young people, from the city and county, aged 13 – 21 years old, flourish across a wide variety of community sporting, entrepreneurial and creative art.
