Community spirit at the heart of Joe's Jog 2024
Posted: Mon, 17 Jun 2024
Runners of all ages and abilities once again turned out in force to run the annual Joe's Jog 2024 family fun run mile in Rothley village.
Joe's Jog, the annual family fun run mile, now in its nineth year, attracted a record 468 runners and raised a fantastic £2252 to support the ongoing work of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT).
The inclusive and family-friendly fun run gives families and children aged seven and over the chance to be part of the Rothley 10k evening. It also raises awareness of the vital work of the JHMT.
The race was started by Paul Nixon, the former Leicestershire, Kent and England cricketer & coach.
Paul Nixon said: "I've have wanted to attend and be part of Joe's Jog for many years, sadly because of cricket commitments over the years it hasn't been possible. Finally, I was able to attend and feel the passion, energy and enthusiasm of this wonderful event. Cheered on by so many spectators it was wonderful sight to see the beaming smiles on people's faces, raising funds and having some much fun running together for Joe's amazing charity."
The first (Boy and Girls) runners to cross the line were: (Boys) 1. Lucas Brown 2. Hugo Don, 3. Cameron Docherty , (Girls) 1. Sophie Surrell, 2.Rossana Brown, 3. Annabel Hawkins.
Joe Humphries was 14 when he collapsed and died suddenly while out jogging near his Rothley home. He was a victim of SADS – sudden arrhythmic death syndrome – a heart condition which can strike anyone at any time, particularly in otherwise fit and healthy young people.
Since Joe's death, his family and friends have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of SADS and sudden heart deaths. The JHMT provide free CPR training in schools, sports clubs and community groups, help fund community defibrillators and campaign for better understanding of SADS.
The charity also runs the Inspire Awards, a small grants scheme that helps inspiring young people (13-21 years of age) from the city and county to fulfill their potential.
Steve Humphries, chair of the JHMT, said: "Once again, It was so uplifting to see the community turn out in such huge numbers for Joe's Jog. This time round it was a record '468' runners of all abilities and ages who helped to create a brilliant atmosphere throughout the race from start to finish. Joe's Jog is a great way to commemorate Joe in his home village of Rothley and raise vital funds for the ongoing work of his Trust to save young lives.
None of this would have been possible without the fantastic support of our sponsors and 'Team Joe' volunteers who gave their valuable time to create a safe and enjoyable environment for all the participants. We are also truly grateful to all our friends at TS Tiger, Leicester Sea Cadets who came along to assist with handing out medals, water and carrying out key stewarding duties at the end of the run. Next year on Tuesday 3rd June 2025, we hope to see everyone return as we reach a landmark 10th run in memory of Joe and to support his charity JHMT."
